Promoter demands R22k refund from ‘Umlando’ hitmaker Toss

It seems Makadzi is not the only performer getting paid and ditching gigs. Umlando hitmaker is reportedly in the midst of financial drama with an Eastern Cape event promoter who demanded Phololo ‘Toss’ Masombuka to pay back the R22 000 he was sent for a gig that he chose not to do on 22 December last year.

‘I DID EVERYTHING BY THE BOOK’: EVENT PROMOTER SKULU MQOLO CALLS TOSS OUT

Musician Phololo ‘Toss’ Masombuka found himself in difficulties after an organiser Skhulu Mqolo reportedly paid him an R12 500 deposit for a gig he did not do.

Toss was allegedly paid 50 per cent to perform at Ditos Bar and Braai in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, but after arriving at the venue, he soon walked out, iHarere reported.

Mqolo reportedly said that the deal was to pay 50 per cent before the performance and the other 50 per cent afterwards.

“I did everything by the book. Toss charged us R25 000 for his performance, and his management asked me to pay a 50% deposit before he could come, and the balance was to be paid after the performance,” Mqolo was reported as saying.

Mqolo added,

“Besides all that, we offered to pay him with cash, but he refused. We paid from a different bank account, and when the money didn’t reflect at the same time, he left and promised to come back after performing at the gig in East London. We never saw him again,” the source qouted.

BLAME IT ON LOAD SHEDDING: WHAT LED THE MUSICIAN TO DITCH THE EVENT?

According to Zimjola, Toss was initially booked to perform on 16 December but he would not have been able to make it to the gig because he had missed his flight from Dubai.

The Manca hitmaker had reportedly been booked to perform at Ekhoneni in East London on 22 December. Mqolo had decided to seize the opportunity and booked Toss to perform in Port Alfred later that day, to which Toss agreed.

Speaking with Zimjoa, Mqolo said,

“We called his management, and they asked that we postpone the event to December 22, which we gladly communicated with our patrons who had bought tickets.”

After his gig was rescheduled, the musician reportedly failed to live up to the terms even after the new agreement was made.

Toss had reportedly been paid an extra R9 500 to cover his travelling and accommodation expenses from East London to Port Alfred.

“But on the day of the event, Toss arrived at the venue with his management to find that the area was hit by load shedding,” a disappointed Mqolo reportedly said.

The event promoter reportedly feels “cheated” and said he felt as though he had lost R22 000 for nothing. Mqolo added that his patrons had bought tickets to see Toss perform and demands Toss return their money.

Toss’s manager Slindile Mpatho reportedly said the deposit was nonrefundable as his artist had come to the venue to find that it was unsuitable for him to perform.

Mqolo reportedly told the source that he had a generator in place, but the star was unhappy and demanded Mqolo pays the rest of the money.

Disenchanted (2022) Review

DON’T LOOK DOWN! (AND DON’T WATCH THIS MOVIE) Survival movies have been around for quite some time and have had mixed results with viewers. Tales of death-defying moments of surviving the unbridled wrath of natural elements, surreal circumstances, and unlucky situations have always been fixed point of fascination with storytelling, leading to one suspense after another and finding thrills within those “fight for flight” moments. Yet, sometimes these films struggle to find a proper balance within its own context, with an unbalanced presentation of trying to focus more on the actual survival sequences (scares, suspense, and thrills) and not much on its characters and story progression. Sometimes narrative can be well-founded within true life events (i.e., based on a true story), while other times some survival accounts were created from fiction. Such prime examples of lates includes 2015’s The Martian, 2015’s Everest, 2016’s The Revenant, 2017’s 47 Meters Down, 2018’s Adrift, 2019’s...
